Scene from Hana Momiji Tsui no Uchikake, 1850

Comments - Great illustration from the kabuki play " Hana Momiji Tsui no Uchikake," a drama about the jealous senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji, who tries to dishonor the junior lady-in-waiting Onoe. Here, Iwafuji has challenged Onoe to a martial arts contest, the true test of a samurai woman. Much to Iwafuji's chagrin, Onoe's loyal maid Ohatsu easily bests the other women. In the center, Ohatsu wields a wooden practice sword in each hand as she kneels atop a fallen woman, sending the beauty at right tumbling. In a pink robe at left, Iwafuji glares angrily as she watches the fight, while Onoe sits on a cushion at right, a sly expression on her face. The actors include Ichikawa Danjuruo V as Iwafuji, Iwai Kumesaburo III as Ohatsu, and Onoe Kikujuro II as Churo Onoe. A lively scene from this famous story.
