Five Chivalrous Men, 1858

Comments - Handsome diptych featuring portraits of the "Five Chivalrous Men" (Gonin Otoko), otokodate or street knights who allegedly protected citizens but were actually a gang of thieves. From top to bottom, the left panel features Ichikawa Danzo as Kaminari, Ichikawa Kuzo as An no, and Sawamura Tossho as Hotei. From top to bottom, the right panel includes Kataoka Nizaemon as Karigane and Nakamura [?] as Gokuin. Each portrait appears in a different shaped inset against a yellow background. An attractive design with expressive figures.

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Two separate panels. Small repair, slight rubbing at edges, a few spots. Please see photos for details.
