Meiji Empress Boating

Comments - Handsome scene of the Meiji Empress and her attendants aboard a magnificent boat with a phoenix at the prow. The Empress stands in the front of the vessel, holding a folding fan and wearing a crown. Beside her, a beauty holds a young prince in her arms. A smaller boat pulls alongside the ship at lower left. The Emperor watches from a verandah built out over the water at right, wearing a black coat patterned with a dragon over a kimono tucked into red patterned pants, surrounded by ladies-in-waiting. Interestingly, he is depicted in traditional dress rather than a military uniform, as is commonly seen. A striking design with vibrant color and wonderful detail. Includes metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the crest of the phoenix.
