Scene from Hatsumoto Yui Soga no Kyodai, 1849

Comments - Great kabuki scene from "Hatsumoto Yui Soga no Kyodai," a drama about the Taira commander Kagekiyo who is imprisoned by the Minamoto. Here, Kagekiyo has broken free from his cell, striking a bold pose as he raises a wooden beam above his head. The stiff sleeves of his padded outer kimono stick out beside him like wings, and his flared wig and red and gray stage makeup give him a fierce expression. At right, the Minamoto general Chichibu Shigetada watches with a worried expression, while Kagekiyo's sweetheart, Akoya, kneels below. From left, the actors Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, Onoe Kikujiro II, and Bando Hikosaburo IV. A striking design, beautifully detailed with burnishing on Kagekiyo's flared wig.
