Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Night Rain at the Top of Mt. Hirefuri, 1861

Comments - Intriguing kabuki design of Princess Wakana fighting the samurai Toriyama Shunsaku Terutada in the driving rain in a scene from the play "Shiranui Monogatari." She wields a sword with one hand as the samurai strikes her on the shoulder with his bow. One sleeve of her outer gray robe has been pushed down to the waist, revealing a white kimono patterned with a spider and spider web over her armor, a reference to her ability to do spider magic. The samurai wears a beautifully burnished black fur vest over a kimono tucked into striped pants, lifting one foot as he lunges forward toward her. The scene takes place in a driving rain at the top of Mt. Hirefuri, with tall pine trees framing the dark night sky. A striking subject, wonderfully detailed.
