Series; Great Swords of Kabuki Collected, 1862

Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Inuyama Dosetsu - Terrific kabuki portrait of Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Inuyama Dosetsu, one of the famous Eight Dog Warriors and a magician who could control fire and water. He is shown here making a magical gesture with one hand while clutching a scroll in his other hand, frowning sternly as he concentrates on a spell. He wears a monk's hood and a gray robe over his armor, a round mirror hung around his neck. Flames and smoke swirl up behind him, with ashes and leaves flying above pine sprigs. A fantastic composition with a beautiful sense of movement in the smoke heightened by careful shading. A great design.
