Chunagon Tomomori - Terrific depiction of great samurai Chunagon Taira no Tomomori leaping into the sea following his defeat at the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura. To retain his honor, he committed suicide by tying himself to a large anchor before jumping off his ship. Here, the stoic warrior grips the anchor over his shoulder with both hands, the rope coiled around his body several times. He wears a suit of armor with broken arrows protruding from it, and a black court cap, a look of determination on his face. He seems top hang weightless in the air as waves crash into the rugged rocks below, the stormy night sky echoing the violence of the sea. A rare and bold design from this famous tale, beautifully detailed with fine bokashi shading on the sky, and burnishing on the black cap, fur scabbard, and fur shoes. The text panel at upper right includes the embossed butterfly crest of the Taira clan. A terrific subject for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.
