Meiji Empress and Princesses, 1879 - Handsome portrait of the Meiji Empress surrounded by princesses and empresses from different time periods. She sits at top center, wearing a silver headdress and holding a fan behind her head. Two women wear similar crowns, a few have hairstyles topped with clusters of flowers, and several wear the long loose hair and "moth's wing" eyebrows popular during the Heian era. The kneeling woman at lower right holds an ornate crown with beaded fringe and two sacred jewels on top of it. Each is dressed in court finery, wearing a beautiful brocade robe over a white kimono tucked into red hakama pants. Folding screens line the back of the room, while a verandah at upper left looks over a river. An interesting subject with lively color and faint embossing on the white kimono.
