Sugoroku Game Board, 1848 - Fantastic, large format, Edo era sugoroku game board featuring people in scenes from everyday life. Sugoroku is a dice game similar to snakes and ladders that was popular with both adults and children. The wide variety of subjects includes mostly Buddhist imagery, such as a portrait of a monk, temples, scenes with deities and rays of light in the sky, pilgrims climbing a mountain, and a view of Hell with people being dipped into a bowling cauldron by demons, along with samurai hunting, a geisha dancing for guests, and examples of filial piety. A great design with wonderful detail.
