Sawamura Tossho as Hanaregoma Chokichi and Nakamura Shikan as Nuregami Chogoro, 1875 - Handsome kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Futatsu Chocho Kuruwa Nikki" (A Diary of Two Butterflies in the Pleasure Quarters), a drama about two rival sumo wrestlers. The older, more experienced sumo Nuregami Chogoro purposely lost a match to the young Hanaregoma no Chokichi in hopes of earning a favor from his patron. When Chokichi learns the truth, he is outraged. In the center, Chokichi grimaces angrily at Chogoro, ready to dash the cup in his hand to the ground. The black robe draped over his shoulder features a burnished swirling pattern. At right, Chogoro glares back at him, his mouth open as he flings his hands out before him. At left, Chokichi's older sister, Oseki watches with a concerned expression. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo, Sawamura Tossho, and Nakamura Shikan. Nice expressive figures set off by the deep red background. Includes additional burnishing on the black kimono collars and the black robe over Chogoro's shoulder.
