Nobleman and Bound Captive, 1880 - Fascinating kabuki scene of a nobleman in court dress reading a scroll to a wild-haired captive who is bound with rope around the shoulders. The prisoner frowns, his eyes open wide as the nobleman regards him soberly, a nun fingering her prayer beads as she looks beseechingly at the nobleman. At left, a second scene shows Iwai Hanshiro as the beauty Omura menaced by a Sanuki no Kinsuke, played by Ichikawa Sadanji, who holds a hairpin in his hand. Nice expressive figures in an attractive composition.
