Scene from Sannin Kichisa Kuruwa no Hatsugai, 1859

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play "Sannin Kichisa Kuruwa no Hatsugai," a complex drama about the evil that occurs following the theft of 100 ryo (gold pieces). It involves three men named Kishisa who are unrelated but become blood brothers after the crime. In the center, Osho Kichisa stands atop a straw mat on the swords thrust at him by a beauty and a samurai. He looks over his shoulder with an angry grimace as he holds an ema or votive plaque in his hand. At left, Ojo Kichisa, who is in disguise as a beauty, stare back at him with her mouth slightly agape. Obo Kichisa kneels at right, flinging one hand out at his side. The scene takes place along the water's edge, with a small shrine at right and a stone wall at left, willow branches framing the evening sky above. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. An interesting design.
