Shin Nigao Magazine, Volume 5

Shin Nigao Magazine - Fantastic kabuki print from the short-lived 1915 shin-hanga publication "Shin Nigao," or "New Portraits," a magazine featuring contemporary actor portraits by a number of artists. Meant to revive interest in kabuki theater and showcase the talents of shin-hanga designers, each issue included several small prints. Many important woodblock artists contributed designs, including Natori Shunsen and Yamamura Toyonari. The magazine only lasted for five issues, though, so prints from the series are rare. A few special designs from Volume 5 portray famous people who were to attend the ceremony installing the new Emperor Taisho. The prints in this group are still attached along the top edge to the original magazine page with printed identification below. These terrific woodblocks are a wonderful choice for a shin-hanga collector or kabuki enthusiast.

Artist - Kondo Koichiro (1884 - 1962)

Image Size - 6 3/8" x 4 1/8" + margins as shown; sheet size 9 1/2" x 6 3/4"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Attached along top edge to page. A few prints have a couple spots. Please see photos for details.
