The New Yoshiwara in Temporary Quarters: Courtesans of the House of Owariya Hikotaro Viewing Cherry Blossoms, 1866

Comments - Lovely scene of the courtesans of the Owariya Hikotaro House in the New Yoshiwara on an outing to view the blossoming cherry trees along the river. The beauties relax inside the cabin of a large pleasure boat, a black lacquer tray in the prow piled high with refreshments and adorned with a bonsai pine, blossoming plum branches, and bamboo, a trio known as the "Three Friends of Winter." At right, a beauty pauses with a brush in hand as she writes a poem slip. Boat men ride on the roof, pushing the vessel along with bamboo poles. A terrific design with wonderful detail in the elegant kimono, and burnishing on the black areas of the prow.
