Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Daikoku and Bando Mitsugoro VI as a Otsuhime, 1864

Comments - Unusual kabuki print featuring Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Daikoku, one of Japan's famous Seven Lucky Gods, dancing about beside a huge daikon radish which looks rather like a figure with legs seen from behind. He waves his magic mallet as he hops on one foot, holding his finger to his chin with a perplexed expression. A flower-shaped inset at upper right depicts Bando Mitsugoro VI as the smiling Princess Otsu, wearing a robe trimmed with ruffles and an ornate headdress topped with a dragon. Daikon radishes are often shown with Daikoku as they are a traditional New Year's Day dish that represents good fortune. An interesting design.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4"

Condition - This print with nice detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at edges from previous mounting. Small repair, slight creasing at corner. Please see photos for details.
