Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty with a Knife, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a beauty with a knife at left, brandishing the weapon as a commoner grabs her by the back, her eyes wide with fear. In the center, a beauty smiles coyly as she holds one end of a cord, the other end held by the commoner at right, how looks down with a worried frown. In the center, a man emerges from the foliage, sheltering a lantern under his sleeve as he watches the couple struggle. At large Buddhist statue can be seen at right. Nice expressive figures in an atmospheric night setting.
