Cherry Blossom Viewing at Ueno Park, 1879

Comments - Terrific scene of the Meiji Emperor and Empress and members of the court enjoying an outing to Ueno Park to view the cherry blossoms in spring. A group of ladies-in-waiting in colorful kimono gathers around the empress in the center, who holds a folding fan above her head. On the verandah of the shrine behind them, the emperor and dignitaries look out over the grounds, dressed in ornate military uniforms. A lovely spring scene with lively color and faint embossing on the white kimono collars and trim.
