Comments - Beautiful triptych depicting the shogun's procession paying a visit to Toshogu Shrine at Nikko, the site dedicated to the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Dressed in formal court robes and caps, the noblemen walk quietly under the black torii gate and up the steps to the entrance gate. Stone lanterns line the base of tall retaining wall, which is draped with the hollyhock crest of the Tokugawa clan. Lovely architectural detail in the ornate red and yellow buildings, which feature carved panels and tile roofs. Pine trees dot the mountains in the distance under the softly shaded sky. A fantastic design with wonderful detail, including burnishing on the torii gate, and a subtle burnished pattern on the black robe at right. A terrific image.
