Original Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Imperial Family

Comments - Interesting depiction of the Meiji Emperor and Empress and family members. The Imperial couple sits at a cloth-covered table at right, the Empress wearing a crown with a veil. A young couple approaches carrying a sake server and a tray with graduated sakes cups on it, followed by young women bearing boxes covered with purple cloth. The women are elegantly dressed in the latest Western fashions, including bustled skirts and gloves, each with a rose in her hair. At upper left, the room opens onto a garden with a splashing fountain in the center of a large pond. Nice detail in the interior setting and the clothing, including accents of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone.
