The Evil Magician Nikki Danjo Stealing a Scroll, 1888

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from a drama about the contested heir to the Date clan. The nursemaid Masaoka has been keeping the boy safe in the women's quarters of the palace while the evil magician Nikki Danjo plots to kill him. At left, Danjo has just returned to human form after transforming himself into a rat to steal an incriminating scroll, which is caught between his teeth. In the center, Masaoka holds up a lantern as she watches the villain. At right, the loyal samurai Otokonsuke reacts with alarm, holding a small knife with which he has just attacked the rat. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Sawamura Gennosuke, Onoe Kikugoro, and Ichikawa Sadanjij. Nice large expressive figures.
