Komatsuya Soshichi, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait from a play about the sales clerk Soshichi of the Komatsuya, who accidentally witnesses the pirate Kezori smuggling and is thrown overboard before he is forced to join the pirate's gang. Here, Soshichi clings to a large rock jutting up out of the water, looking over her shoulder with an angry frown, his wet hair falling limply around his face. A sail billows in the wind behind him, and splashing waves can just be seen at center right. A bold design with an expressive figure.
