Comments - Handsome triptych illustrating a scene from the kabuki play "Yoru no tsuru omoi no yukidoke." Several men have arrived for an audience with the Kamakura era warrior and chief of police Aoto Saemon Fujitsuna, played by Nakamura Utaemon, who sits in a canopied room surrounded by sliding screens, wearing formal court robes and a black court cap. Two young pages sit behind him, one holding his sword upright. Three of the visitors are clad in simple, pale blue kimono, bowing forward respectfully. A samurai and beauty kneel on a low platform at right, the woman grinning coyly and looking at the daimyo out of the corners of her eyes. The group at far left seems rather unhappy, a disgruntled older man frowning angrily and the young man in the checked robe looking up rather sheepishly, his brows furrowed. Wonderfully expressive faces and interaction between the figures. An intriguing subject, nicely detailed with handsome wood grain impression.
