Scene from Fujimi Saigyo, 1849

Comments - Interesting scene from the play "Fujimi Saigyo," a tale about Sato Norikyo, who becomes the priest Saigyo. Here, he fights off three guards, kneeling atop one attacker as another behind him raises an iron truncheon above his head. A third man has tumbled to the ground at lower right, extending his club with an angry grimace. Above, the nobleman Kiso Yoshinaka and the courtesan Osakayama watch the conflict with alarm. Yoshinaka wears an elegant tunic with bands of flowers and scrolls over full pants patterned with fish. The sliding panels lining the back of the room feature a view of a snow-capped mountain. The actors include Sawamura Chojuro V as Saigyo and Onoe Baiko IV as Osakayama. Nice expressive figures.
