Okina-an Restaurant at Nihonbashi: Onoe Kikugoro III as the Old Man of Kasahara at Nihonbashi, 1852 - Handsome posthumous portrait of Onoe Kikugoro III as the old man of Kasahara, the great martial arts master Tsukahara Bokuden. He was famous for training the young warrior Miyamoto Musashi in the art of fencing at his rustic cabin in the mountains. He is shown here looking over his shoulder with a careworn frown, his white hair flowing loosely over his shoulders. He holds a wooden pot lid which he used as a defensive tool to block blows while practicing with Musashi. The featured restaurant is Okina-an, which means "cottage of the old man," an appropriate pairing for this character. A wonderful, expressive design with soft shading and handsome wood grain impression in the wintry gray sky, and a hand-applied spattering of gofun (white pigment) to simulate falling snow.
