Cloth Bleaching in the Rokutama River, 1849

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Onoe Baiko IV as a beauty in the play "Date zensei sakura no iromaku." Here, she waves two lengths of cloth that she has been bleaching in the Rokutama River. The white strips flow across the sky in graceful rippling loops, floating weightlessly in the air. The woman looks ahead with a rather worried expression, her mouth slightly agape. She wears a blue outer robe lined in brown over a red tie-dyed kimono with violet floral bands on the sleeves, her feet bare. The first time we've seen this striking design.
