Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Chobei and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Shirai Gonpachi, 1862

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the famous otokodate or street knight Banzui Chobei encountering the outlaw Shirai Gompachi at Suza-ga-Mori near Edo. A gang had been waiting to capture Gompachi for the reward, attacking him as stopped for a break while traveling. While fighting off his attackers, Chobei's arrived in a palanquin, and he was impressed by the young rogue's swordsmanship. After vanquishing his foes, Gompachi wipes clean the blade of his sword with a cloth, his scabbard dangling over his back by a cord between his teeth. Chobei watches in astonishment from his palanquin at left, his arms folded firmly across his chest. A large stone marker stands behind him, and waves lap gently along the shore at right. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII. An attractive design from this famous tale.
