Series; Flower Patterns, 1896

The Tenmei Era (1781 - 1789) - Lovely portrait of a beauty from the Tenmei Era applying makeup as she looks in a hand mirror. She holds a white cloth in her other hand as she looks at her reflection intently, dressed in an elegant kimono patterned with scenes of couples from the famous novel "The Tale of Genji." Her hair is ornately styled, adorned with a translucent tortoise shell comb and hairpin. An orange clouds decorated with confetti-like yellow dots separates the figure from a scene of men strolling along under a softly glowing full moon, with trees in gray silhouette against the evening sky. A terrific design from this striking series of beauties from different historical eras. Detailed with metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on areas of the kimono and around the mirror.
