Beauty and Companion, 1855

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait of a beauty smiling fondly at her male companion. She holds her red under robe to her chin, a small covered container in her other hand. The man rests his elbows on the edge of a brazier, a pair of chopsticks in hand, looking up with an unhappy expression. He wears a blue and gray plaid kimono over a light blue tie-dyed under robe, a dotted towel draped over his shoulder. The loose wisps of hair at the side of his face give him a rather disheveled appearance. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair, embossed lines along the side of the noses, and fine bokashi shading in the background.

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 1/2"
