Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. Full of violence and intense emotions, Yoshitoshi's bold and innovative compositions tackled a historic subject using a modern style. His realism and drafting skill captured the important legacy of these national heroes at a time when Japan was struggling with the aftermath of the Satsuma Rebellion. Classic Yoshitoshi images, these dynamic prints are a great choice for collectors.
Minamoto no Raiko and His Men in the Lair of Shuten-doji - Fantastic scene of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko) and his men at the mountain lair of the terrible demon, Shuten-doji. Disguised as traveling monks, Raiko and his retainers traveled to the monster's hideout to rescue the young beauties he had kidnapped. They are shown here enjoying a banquet, plying Shuten-doji with sake to put him into a drunken stupor. The demon sits at right, resting sleepily against an armrest and holding an enormous cup filled with sake, as one of Raiko's men performs a dance to entertain him. A terrific subject from this great legend, nicely detailed.
