Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. Full of violence and intense emotions, Yoshitoshi's bold and innovative compositions tackled a historic subject using a modern style. His realism and drafting skill captured the important legacy of these national heroes at a time when Japan was struggling with the aftermath of the Satsuma Rebellion. Classic Yoshitoshi images, these dynamic prints are a great choice for collectors.

Tawara Toda Hidesato in Audience with the Emperor - Handsome portrait of the famed general Tawara Toda Hidesato during an audience with the emperor. Known for vanquishing a Taira rebellion during the Heian era, Hidesato also supposedly battled an enormous centipede for the Dragon King, earning a reward of a never-empty bag of rice and acquiring the nickname "Tawara" (rice-bag). Instead of fighting rebels or mythical creatures, Yoshitoshi shows him in a quiet moment from everyday life, kneeling respectfully at court as the emperor faces him from a low platform. Retainers in black court robes and caps line the edges of the elegant room hung with fine reed blinds. An interesting depiction of this legendary military leader.
