Crazy Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo - Yoshitoshi's comic series titled "Crazy Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo" was published in 1881. These satirical images parodied life in modern Tokyo with scenes ranging from an octopus refusing to be sold at a fish market to physical mishaps on the street to encounters with ghosts and monsters. Watch for glimpses of the modernization taking place during the Meiji era, such as western dress or inventions like the camera and telescope. Like his full size prints, these designs are carefully drawn and printed with the same attention to detail. These witty and amusing scenes provide a comic look at contemporary life in Tokyo as designed by one of the great woodblock masters.
