Artist's Paintings Coming to Life - Amusing scene from a series of twelve prints depicting an artist's paintings coming to life while he sleeps. The first image shows the painter busily at work with two brushes at once. After drinking sake, he falls asleep behind the finished paintings propped up against the wall, his feet visible at right. The figures step off the page and entertain themselves, drinking sake, wrestling, and throwing paint at each other. When the artist awakes, he is astonished to find his dishes of paint broken and overturned on the mat in front of his works, and that two of the figures have changed places! The samurai is now in the painting at right, undressed with black ink on his face, while the beauty is in the center with green paint on her face. The first time we've seen this terrific comic series. Only the last print in the series is signed.
