Generations of Tokugawa Shoguns

Comments - Terrific group portrait of the fifteen Tokugawa shoguns seated under drapery patterned with the Tokugawa crest of three hollyhock leaves, each shogun carefully identified with a red name cartouche. At top center, the first Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu wears a black robe with burnished pattern of the hollyhock crest. At lower left, the fifteenth and last Tokugawa Shogun Yoshinobu wears a burnished black military uniform and sits on an embossed fur draped over his chair. At bottom center is the seventh Shogun Ietsugu, who ruled for only three years as a child before dying at age six. A handsome design, beautifully detailed with additional burnished patterns on the black kimono at lower left and black robe at lower right, and embossing on the white kimono.
