The Second Month (Kisaragi), 1859 - Beautiful triptych of the young Mitsuuji, the "Country Genji," watching furtively as he stands beside small pavilion perched atop a hill overlooking a beautiful garden. The nobleman waits on the doorstep, his sandals removed, as a matron examines a letter at right, holding lantern aloft. Inside the pavilion, a beauty grabs hold of her kimono, shielding her face with her sleeve as if frightened of the approaching visitors, a roll of tissues caught between her feet. Stepping stones lead across the grounds below, with several buildings along the water's edge. A plum tree blossoms overhead, heralding the arrival of warmer weather. A lovely scene with wonderful detail, including embossing on the white kimono collars and trim and burnishing on the black kimono.
