The Priest Doshin, 1856

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of the priest Karukaya Doshin, formerly the daimyo Kato Sayemon Shigeuji of Kyushu. Shigeuji who fled his station and title and became a priest to escape his jealous wife, but his young son came searching for him. Here, he wanders along a mountain path, looking up with a slightly surprised expression as he holds an envelope in his hand, a string of prayer beads around his wrist. He wears a blue cowl over a black priest's robe, tied with a violet sash. A bucket of greenery rests on the ground nearby, and a pine tree frames a view of the distant mountains. An interesting design with an attractive setting.
