Original Ishikawa Toraji (1875 - 1964) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Seto Inland Sea (Setonaikai), circa 1935

Ishikawa Toraji - Born in Kochi, Ishikawa Toraji earned fame for his Western-style paintings. He founded an association of Western-style painters in 1902, and traveled throughout the United States and Europe. He created a number of woodblock prints, most notably a 1934 shin-hanga series titled "Ten Nudes." The majority of his works were landscapes, however. His lively and colorful designs are prized by modern collectors.

Comments - Handsome view of boats on the Seto Inland Sea. In the foreground, a man lifts an anchor in the prow of a boat while his fellow sailor pulls on a line. A small dinghy is tied to the front of the ship. Reflections ripple on the surface of the water, and haze drifts across the sky in the distance. A terrific modern design. Signed in ink within the image at lower right, and printed on paper watermarked with "Ishikawa Toraji" in Japanese.
