Comments - Great depiction of Sato Masakiyo (the real-life Kato Kiyomasa) and his retainers on a ship in a scene from "The Taiheiki," the famous chronicle of the warring period between the Northern and Southern courts in 14th century Japan. He sits in the center, gesturing imperiously with his fan, his personal standard above his back topped with feathery plumes. The ship is tightly packed with warriors in armor and helmets, ready to fight upon landing. A samurai stands in the front of the ship, gripping his pole arm with both hands, a determined expression on his face. At upper right, an elegant palace is nestled between cliffs, with troops massed along the front of the structure. A terrific design, wonderfully detailed.
