Series; Twelve Views of Modern Beauties

Cheerful-looking: Ryogoku Bridge, circa 1822 - 1823 - Lovely head and shoulders portrait of a cheerful beauty, smiling as she holds a shamisen. She wears a bat patterned kimono over a robe with a bamboo print collar, her hair adorned with a large tortoiseshell comb and hairpins decorated with butterflies and flowers. Her fashionable lipstick takes on a green tone when applied more thickly, giving her lips a two color appearance. An inset above in the form of a scroll features a view of Ryogoku Bridge in Edo, the river busy with boat traffic. A terrific early Edo design.
