Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Raising a Sword

Comments - Interesting kabuki portrait of a man raising a sword above his head as he prepares to strike his companion. He stares ahead with a determined frown as his intended victim grimaces, seemingly unaware of the coming attack. At left, a samurai leans over the garden gate, his gray hair pulled back into a slender topknot. At upper left, panels with a lovely landscape of a silhouetted pagoda and rooftops among trees lines the back of the room. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair and burnishing on the black coat and black kimono collar, and a dusting of mica on the landscape panels.

Artist - Meiji era artist (unsigned)

Image Size - 14" x 19"

Condition - This print with good color and detail as shown. Two attached panels, backed with paper. Slight separation at end of vertical centerfold, repaired. A few creases and spots, hole. Please see photos for details.
