Ichikawa Danjuro as Benkei by Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Ichikawa Danjuro as Benkei

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as the warrior monk Benkei. He grimaces with rage as he looks to the side, a walking stick in one hand and a string of prayer beads in the other. He wears a boldly patterned black kimono over a suit of armor trimmed with fringe on the bottom, and a monks stole decorated with white pompoms. He carries a wicker chest over his back that would contain a statue of a deity. A great expressive figure.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 1/4" x 9 1/8"

Condition - This print with good detail as shown. Paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. Holes, thinning at edge, repaired. Light rippling, curling. Please see photos for details.
