The Night Attack of the 47 Ronin, 1884

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene from the "Kanadehon Chushingura" showing 47 ronin during the attack on Moronao's mansion. Two samurai, dressed in the ronin's traditional dogtooth bordered robes, battle one of Moronao's retainers in the center with a spear and a sword. Their enemy fights back, swinging a sword in each hand and grimacing angrily, as two other ronin watch from the sides. The room opens onto the snowy courtyard and garden beneath the evening sky, blossoming plum trees adding a colorful note to the snow. A great dramatic scene with lively color and a dynamic composition.
