Festive Drinking Party under Maple Leaves, 1861

Comments - Terrific scene of Prince Genji and guests enjoying a maple viewing party in autumn. He sits on a cushion in the center, smiling and shaking a floral ornament as the young princess at right rushes forward to take it, grinning with delight. Her mother stands behind her, guiding her along a wooden walkway over the water. At left, beauties play shamisen and koto, and a young girl carries in a tray with a covered bowl and chopsticks. Dishes of food are already arranged on a tiered tray next to the nobleman. A maple tree covered with colorful foliage overlooks the pond and garden, with stone lanterns dotting the shore. A charming image with wonderful detail, including fine bokashi shading on the water and sky, and burnishing on the black obi and lacquer ware.
