Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Dan-no-Ura Kabuto Gunki." The Genji commander Shigetada kidnapped the lovely courtesan Akoya, mistress of the warrior Taira Kagekiyo, hoping to force her to reveal his whereabouts after he escaped following the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The beauty sits in the center, looking up with a saucy grin at Shigetada's enraged retainer Iwanaga. He grimaces at her furiously, drawing his blade as he holds the weapon above his head. He wears a bold green and yellow kamishimo with a dragon print over a burnished black kimono, his red stage makeup and flared wig adding to his imposing appearance. At left, Shigetada watches the beauty with an angry frown. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo, Nakamura Shikan, Ichikawa Sadanji, and Onoe Kikugoro. Nice large figures with vibrant color, set off by a deep blue background with a simulated red lacquer frame. Detailed with embossing on the white kimono trim.
