New Year's Day in the Twelfth Month

Series; Edo Brocade

New Year's Day in the Twelfth Month - Terrific scene of dancers performing during a New Year's celebration inside a mansion or teahouse. In the center, a man with a lobster tied to his head rides a giant wooden pestle as if it were a horse, a mask hanging from the side of his face. Oranges scatter along the floor from the woven basket at his side. At left, a float with a lion's head atop a giant mochi cake is followed by other floats topped with dancing figures. Men and women kneel along the edges of the room, a group of beauties at right smiling and chatting as they watch. A great depiction of a holiday event, with beautiful detail in the clothing and interior setting. Includes embossing on the white kimono collars and trim at right.
