The fellow at upper right glares at his companion, who also has grabbed the beauty's sleeve. Above, tree trunks frame a view of a mansion with a large wooden gate at upper left. This play is an example of a "Zangirimono" or "Cropped Hair Play," a genre which depicted contemporary Meiji characters in real-life dramas involving ordinary people. It takes its name from the close-cropped hairstyle adopted by men during the Meiji era. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Ichikawa Sadanji.
