Series; Comparisons for the Thirty-six Poets, 1852

Poem by Kiyowara Motosuke: Ichikawa Danzo VI as the Hunter Shibaroku - Handsome portrait of Ichikawa Danzo VI as Shibaroku in a scene from the play commonly known as "Imoseyama." His son has been arrested for killing one of the sacred deer at Nara, and has been ordered to be executed. He frowns unhappily, his arms folded firmly across his chest, looking out of the corners of his eyes with a worried expression. He wears a plaid outer kimono with a brown and white geometric design over the shoulders, one sleeve pushed down to the waist to reveal a blue tie-dyed under robe. The landscape above shows a pair of the deer atop a low hill at Nara, under the colorful autumn foliage of maple trees. The evening sky and grass are softly shaded. A fine expressive figure, nicely detailed.
