Minamoto no Yoshitsune and His Sweetheart, Shizuka Gozen, 1872 - Handsome kabuki scene from a drama about the great warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who appears at right looking over his shoulder with a solemn expression. While fleeing to avoid the wrath of his brother, the Shogun Yoritomo, Yoshitsune gives his sweetheart Lady Shizuka a small drum as a gift, telling her to think of it as a part of himself. In the center, she leans forward with an eager smile as she holds the drum, happy to have it. Behind her, Washi-no-o Saburo glares at the samurai Kumai Taro at left, who wears an elegant floral kimono over a suit of armor, a fan in his hand. At upper left, a pagoda rises above the snowcapped trees along the horizon beneath a wintry gray sky. From left, the actors are Nakamura Kanjaku, Iwai Shijaku, Ichikawa Sadanji, and Kawarazaki Gonnosuke. A handsome design with large expressive figures and an attractive landscape background.
