Scene from Eiri shosetsu Asagao monogatari, 1848 - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Eiri shosetsu Asagao monogatari." The daughter of a daimyo, the beauty Miyuki met the samurai Miyagi Asojiro when their boats passed while hunting fireflies on the Uji River. The pair fell in love, and Asojiro wrote a poem on her fan decorated with morning glories (asagao). Here, Asojiro stand in a boat at left, holding a message written on a red cloth and frowning angrily as he looks back at the beauty's mother, Otsune, who scowls at him. At right, Miyuki smiles sweetly, the fan in her hand, wearing a black kimono shaded in gray with a pattern of hollyhock leaves. When Miyuki fails to hear from Asojiro again, she goes blind from weeping and becomes a traveling musician. The actors include Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Asojiro and Bando Shuka I as Miyuki. An attractive scene from this popular play.
