Fight on a Buddhist Statue, 1861

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the samurai Inaba Kozo defending himself against several of attackers on a giant Buddhist statue. He balances across the arms of the figure, simultaneously grabbing a chain flung at him by Tanba Yosaku while struggling against a policeman thrusts an iron truncheon around his neck from behind. A blow from his sword has sent another attacker tumbling head over heels towards the ground below. At lower right, Sagisaka Sanai perches calmly on the leg of the sculpture, quietly watching the From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Ichimura Uzaemon XI. Nicely detailed with a burnishing pattern on the black kimono at left and burnishing on the black kimono at right. A dramatic action scene with a bold composition.

Condition - This print with nice color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Tape on reverse at top corners from previous mounting. A few small repairs, staining, slight rubbing at edge. Please see photos for details.
