Scene from Horaisan Yotsugi Soga, 1851

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Horaisan Yotsugi Soga," a drama about the famous Soga Brothers, whose father was killed by the nobleman Suketsune while the boys were young. As adults, they vowed to avenge their father's death. Here, Suketsune sits atop a platform at left, holding out a red lacquer sake cup during a New Year's celebration attended by the brothers, who will declare their intentions. He wears a beautiful robe decorated with fierce dragons. At lower right, the strongman Asahina, easily recognizable by his "monkey makeup" and striking crane kimono, watches the situation unfold with alarm, gripping an enormous glaive in his hand. The beautiful courtesan Oiso no Tora stands behind him, holding a long-handled sake warmer. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII, Bando Shuka I as Oiso no Tora, and Arashi Kichisaburo III as Asahina. Nicely detailed.
